Review: An Impossible Impostor

An Impossible Impostor An Impossible Impostor by Deanna Raybourn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I’ll tell you to read it (but read the others in the series first!)

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for this advanced copy! All opinions expressed are my own.

Book Summary:

London, 1889. Veronica Speedwell and Stoker are summoned by Sir Hugo Montgomerie, head of Special Branch, with a special non-official request. Determine if the man who has appeared at the home of his god-daughter is who he claims. Eldest son, Jonathan, was believed killed in a volcanic eruption, and now a man claiming to be him has shown up at the family home.

Veronica and Stoker agree to go to Hathaway Hall to covertly investigate the mysterious amnesiac. Veronica is soon shocked to find herself face-to-face with a ghost from her past. To help Sir Hugo discover the truth, she must open doors to her own history that she long believed to be shut for good.

Review:

Through this story line, we learn a little more about Veronica’s history. We had a pretty big surprise dropped into the mix! No spoilers, but there were definitely things I didn’t see coming! I always enjoy a good mystery romp with Veronica and Stoker. I love her strong mind and will to always seek the truth, without fear or worry or repercussions. Through a series of twists and turns in the story, there turns out to be more than one mystery to solve (the mysterious man’s identity, and a missing jewel). I really enjoyed the extra little bit of history that was thrown in about the British Empire during the time preceding the story time period.

Review: The Bookshop of Second Chances

The Bookshop of Second Chances The Bookshop of Second Chances by Jackie Fraser
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I’ll tell you to read it

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for this advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own.

Book Summary:

Thea Mottram is having a bad month. She’s been let go from her office job with no notice and her husband has decided to leave her for one of her friends. When she learns that a distant great uncle in Scotland has passed away, leaving her his home and a hefty antique book collection, she decides to leave Sussex for a few weeks. Escaping to a small coastal town where no one knows her seems to be exactly what she needs.

Thea falls for the quaint cottage and small town. She loves the locals, except bookshop owner Edward Maltravers. His attitude, ingrained by his long standing feud with his brother, tests Thea. As considers the impulse to stay in Scotland indefinitely, Thea realizes that her new life may quickly become just as complicated as the one she was running from.

Review:

I really enjoyed getting lost in small town Scotland for this story. The interplay between all the characters kept me on my toes! I really enjoyed getting to know Thea and Edward, and I’ve always wondered about used book store practices. The value of some of the vintage books mentioned was shocking! The descriptions of some of the areas they visited made me want to visit Scotland sometime and go stay in a little village to get lost in the world for a bit.

Review: If the Fates Allow: A Short Story

If the Fates Allow: A Short Story If the Fates Allow: A Short Story by Rainbow Rowell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 out of 5 stars - It was ok

Book Summary:

Social distancing came easily to Reagan. But Reagan doesn’t want her grandpa to be alone for Christmas this year—he’s already spent too much time on his own in 2020. So she heads back to her hometown with a dish of holiday Jell-O salad, hoping it will be safe…

She isn’t expecting to run into the boy next door. Mason is all grown up now. He’s considerate. He’s funny. He doesn’t mind how prickly Reagan is—he maybe even likes it. And it makes Reagan feel like her defenses are falling. She needs her defenses, doesn’t she? In a time when six feet is close enough, how long can they keep their distance?

Review:

I felt like this needed to be fleshed out a bit more. It was a cute, short story… but it could easily have been made into more of a novella. I liked and completely related to the characters. I think it hit a little too close to home though…

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, Wednesday Books for this advanced copy. Opinions shared are completely my own.

Summary:
Doe and her friends are determined to win the century-long war against Winfield Academy before they graduate. But when it is announced that The Weston School will merge with Winfield Academy, the pranks take on a new meaning.

Doe needs to prove that the two schools cannot mix, as a way to protect her safe haven for future students. She starts by aiming directly for Three, the king of Winfield and her long-time nemesis. In order to get under his skin, she strikes a deal with his cousin, Wells, for a fake relationship - in return for Doe helping to return a family heirloom to Wells.

In order to stay ahead of the pranks, lies, and her own growing feelings for Wells, Doe does everything she can to keep her world upright. As the year goes on, Doe has to decide what is more important - the school legacy and winning a rivalry or protecting her students from something much more dangerous. When the rumors prove to be true about a teacher with inappropriate intentions, Doe has a choice to make.

Review:
This was a great book with characters who felt extremely real. In the stereotypical review wording - I laughed, I cried! I finished this book in 2 days and stayed up hours past my bedtime to get to the end and see how it all turned out. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a YA book that will suck them in with great pranks, believable characters, and a love story.

Review: Unwanted Love

Unwanted Love Unwanted Love by Rachel Smith
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - if you ask me, I'll tell you to read it (with some caveats)

I chose this book 100% for the cover photo. My parents have that exact photo hanging in their bathroom at home. I grew up spending summer weekends at Clear Lake. It's my happy place.

Summary:
Kat Willis grew up the only child of a wealthy family in Crystal Lake. She was mostly raised by staff and put out for show when it benefited her parents image. In rebellion, Kat has become the local wild child, going out to bars and having one night stands (and ONLY one night, no repeating). When she meets Jaxson McAllister, her world is flipped on its head. She's never had someone get under her skin and into her mind like him.

Review:
I went into this story without many expectations. I was pleasantly surprised by the story line, but I kept thinking "how in the world am I only at xx%? I feel like this should be wrapping up pretty soon.". The extra story beyond what I was expecting made for a nice ending. I stayed up later than I should have just to figure out how we were going to get to the happily ever after.

I was annoyed that the author kept calling her lady bits a hoo-hoo. It seemed somewhat immature. "I seriously thought my hoo-hoo was going to explode right there." I've heard hoo-ha, va-jay-jay, or other less PC things, but I've never in my life heard it called hoo-hoo. Especially not in a book when talking about sex.

Review: How to Survive a Modern-Day Fairy Tale

How to Survive a Modern-Day Fairy Tale

How to Survive a Modern-Day Fairy Tale by Elle Cruz
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it

Thank you to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for this advanced copy. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

Summary:
Claire Ventura, the middle child of a Filipino American family, is the people-pleaser trying to make sure differences are dealt with and disagreements are kept to a minimum.... sometimes at her own expense. She works in a bookstore, but dreams of opening her own cookie decorating business (rather than just having it as a side hustle). Claire spends her days decorating cookies, visiting her Lola (grandmother) in the memory ward of the local nursing home, and working at the bookstore. So, when she almost runs over a man while parking her car, she's shocked when he wants to spend more time with her. She is even more surprised to find that he is local tech billionaire Nate Noruta.

Review:
I could relate to Claire, as someone who is not comfortable in the spotlight or the ability to jump away from a steady job into the potential unknown. The story sucked me in to see what might happen next. There were so many internal struggles of the characters. I really enjoyed learning a little about the Filipino American immigrant story, and I loved the interaction between Claire and her two sisters. It seemed completely real and relatable. Nate and Claire struggle in their new, whirlwind relationship to find a way to integrate their completely different lives. Nate lives in the spotlight, with paparazzi and social media, while Claire lives in her normal, everyday world. Nate travels around the world regularly on business, while Claire usually stays close to home. I read late into the night in order to see how Claire and Nate would end up with their (absolutely necessary) happily ever after.

Review: Yes No Maybe So

Yes No Maybe So Yes No Maybe So by Becky Albertalli
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it

Summary:
Jamie Goldberg, an awkward guy, is working with his cousin on a State Senate campaign. He enjoys being involved, as long as it's behind the scenes. Maya Rehman, an outgoing gal, is dealing with a canceled summer trip, an MIA best friend, and parents that are separating. The two couldn't be more different. In a weird twist, the two (re)meet at a Ramadan celebration, realizing that they were great friends as children. Their mothers, friends for many years, determine that the two should join the door-to-door canvassing for the political candidate. Through the hours of canvassing, they grow closer and learn more about each other.

Review:
I really enjoyed the story of these two. The political story seems loosely based on the Raphael Warnock special election, with the tense and personal stories on the line. I liked learning about the behind the scenes of some of the political elections, as well as how to contact those currently in office. I also really liked learning more about Ramadan through the interactions between Maya and Jamie. A mostly easy read, with some twists and turns on the way to a happy ending for most in the story.

Review: Castle of Refuge

Castle of Refuge Castle of Refuge by Melanie Dickerson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Thank you to Thomas Nelson Publishers and NetGalley for the advanced copy I received. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it.

Castle of Refuge is a retelling of "The Ugly Duckling"... sort of. I'm not sure I really see it, but that's what the publishers and author claim.

Book Summary:
Audrey, daughter of a viscount born in late fourteenth-century England, was hurt and irreparably scarred by her sister four years ago... damaging her marriage prospects. When her father announces his plans to marry off his damaged daughter to a man much older, Audrey decides to flee in search of her true destiny. She soon finds herself attacked, sick, and in desperate need of help. She is taken in at Dericott Castle to be nursed back to health. While there, she decides to keep her identity a secret and work as a servant in the castle. But she doesn’t count on falling in love with the young and handsome Lord Dericott, who lost his arm several months earlier and bears scars of his own. Meanwhile, Edwin—Lord Dericott—is curious about the new, well-educated servant’s identity. All he knows is that he's quickly becoming smitten with her. When the man Audrey’s father wanted her to marry comes looking for her, she and Edwin must make life-changing decisions about what to believe and whether or not love is truly worth trusting.

Review:
I really enjoyed the book and read it quite quickly. I did have to wonder about some of the likelihood of some things happening based on when it was set in history. The story line and characters made me curious enough that I will go back and read the other books in the series. Audrey and Edwin were likeable characters, and you couldn't help but appropriately like or hate some of the others. Yes, the story line is completely predictable in that we all know there's a happy ending, BUT there were enough twists to keep my interest.

Review: Meet You in the Middle

Meet You in the Middle Meet You in the Middle by Devon Daniels
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it.

Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group and NetGalley for this Advanced Readers Copy.

This is the story of Ben and Kate, Senate staffers from opposite sides of the aisle. When they get off to a really rocky start, it turns into an office war of mail pranks and verbal jabs. The line between animosity and attraction becomes blurred and questions start to arise about how a politically opposite relationship could work.

I read this over the weekend as a way to escape the world for a few hours. It was light-hearted and fun, with minimal politics all things considered. The story line may have been inspired by the 2016 election, but little is actually discussed about the details of politics going on in the country currently. I enjoyed watching 2 characters with opposing views overcome the stereotypes and see past the labels to figure out how they could come together for a successful relationship.

Review: The Duchess

The Duchess The Duchess by Wendy Holden
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it.

Thank you to Berkley Publishing Group and NetGalley for this advance copy.

This book was extremely interesting and not at all what I was expecting. Told in two different timelines, it shares the life of Wallis Simpson as she met David (Edward, Prince of Wales) and right after his death. Going into this book with only a little knowledge of Wallis and the history, I was expecting to dislike her and her part in the history. What I didn't expect was to come away with a completely different opinion and feeling a little sorry for her.

The early timeline introduces you to Wallis, her family and relationship history, and how she came to be married and living in London. Her husband, Ernest, tries to find ways to keep Wallis entertained and making friends, but it doesn't happen until she's invited for lunch at her sister-in-law's home where she meets some "fun and fashionable" people who eventually invite her into their world a little. Over time, this is how she is introduced to David.

As the friendship with David grows, Ernest and Wallis have to decide what they want within their marriage. They want to stay together, and find a way for both to be happy as well.

In the end, the way Wallis ends up married to David is not at all what I expected or could have dreamed up. This book makes me want to go learn a little more about the history that happened in the time and place of King Edward's short reign.

Book Details

"A young girl who is empowered, capable, and smart...the Enola Holmes book series convey an impactful message that you can do anything if you set your mind to it, and it does so in an exciting and adventurous way."--Millie Bobby Brown

Enola Holmes is back! Nancy Springer's nationally bestselling series and breakout Netflix sensation returns to beguile readers young and old in Enola Holmes and the Black Barouche.

Enola Holmes is the much younger sister of her more famous brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft. But she has all the wits, skills, and sleuthing inclinations of them both. At fifteen, she's an independent young woman--after all, her name spelled backwards reads 'alone'--and living on her own in London. When a young professional woman, Miss Letitia Glover, shows up on Sherlock's doorstep, desperate to learn more about the fate of her twin sister, it is Enola who steps up. It seems her sister, the former Felicity Glover, married the Earl of Dunhench and per a curt note from the Earl, has died. But Letitia Glover is convinced this isn't the truth, that she'd know--she'd feel--if her twin had died.

The Earl's note is suspiciously vague and the death certificate is even more dubious, signed it seems by a John H. Watson, M.D. (who denies any knowledge of such). The only way forward is for Enola to go undercover--or so Enola decides at the vehement objection of her brother. And she soon finds out that this is not the first of the Earl's wives to die suddenly and vaguely--and that the secret to the fate of the missing Felicity is tied to a mysterious black barouche that arrived at the Earl's home in the middle of the night. To uncover the secrets held tightly within the Earl's hall, Enola is going to require help--from Sherlock, from the twin sister of the missing woman, and from an old friend, the young Viscount Tewkesbury, Marquess of Basilwether!

Enola Holmes returns in her first adventure since the hit Netflix movie brought her back on the national bestseller lists, introducing a new generation to this beloved character and series.

Author Interview

I had the opportunity to ask a few questions of the author. Check it out below!

Q: What made you decide to bring back the characters for a new book after such a long wait?

NS: Trying to keep the wolf from the door. I actually wrote Enola Holmes and the Black Barouche after the 2008 recession. But at that time I didn't succeed in placing the manuscript with a publisher.

Q: What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?

NS: I could name a bunch of names, but you wouldn't recognize them; they are just workaday writers. They help me by being the eccentric individuals they are, and therefore reassuring me that it's all right to be as loco as necessary to get the job done.

Q: Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?

NS: I don't read the reviews on Goodreads or Amazon, just the ones in, say, Publishers Weekly. I can deal with a bad review a lot better if it's well written.

Q: What was your hardest scene to write?

NS: I don't recall any one being different than the others. Normally I just struggle along from sentence to sentence.

Q: Does writing energize or exhaust you?

NS: It wears me out, but it's a pleasure. The time flies.

Are you interested in reading a little more?

“Is she fainted?”

Indignant, I wanted to sit up and say I was not so easily killed and I never fainted, but to my surprise my body would not obey me. I merely stirred and murmured.

“She’s moving.”

I saw the clodhopper boots of common men surrounding me and smelled alcohol on the breath of those leaning over me.

“Let’s get ’er inside.”

“Somebody go fer the doctor.”

Strong hands, not ungentle, seized me by the feet and shoulders. I could have kicked and yelled—I felt strong enough now—but my mind had started to function, realizing that I was about to be carried into a pub, for only in a public house, or pub, would workmen be drinking in the daytime. And normally no woman of good repute would enter a pub, or if she did, she would be jeered at until she retreated. But, my avid brain realized, fate in the form of Jezebel had given me opportunity to spend some time inside a pub—no, in the pub, most likely the only pub in Threefinches! So I closed my eyes and pretended to be rather more helpless than I was as the men hauled me inside and laid me down on a high-backed bench by the hearth.

Someone brought something pungent in lieu of smelling salts, but I shook my head, pushed the malodourous hand away, opened my eyes, and sat up, acting as if it were a great effort for me to do so. A burly, bearded man in an apron, undoubtedly the publican who kept the place, came running with a pillow for my back, and I thanked him with a gracious smile.

“Will ye have a nip of brandy, lydy?”

“No, thank you. Water, please.”

“Jack! Water for the lydy!” he bellowed to some underling, and he remained nearby as I managed, with hands that genuinely trembled, to remove my gloves. Their thin kidskin leather was ruined by the mauling it had taken from Jezebel’s reins, and my hands were red and sore; doubtless they would bruise. Grateful for the cool glass, I held it in both hands and sipped, looking around me. Half of the denizens of the place, like the owner, stood in a semicircle staring at me not unpleasantly, while the rest did the same from seats at the rustic tables—all but one. A tall man with beard stubble on his chin and quite a shock of coarse brownish-grey hair hiding his forehead had withdrawn to a table by the wall, where he devoted his attention to his mug of ale, or stout, or whatever noxious brew he might fancy. I said brightly to the tavern-keeper, “I believe I would like to stand up.”

“Now, why not wait for the doctor, lydy—”

But taking hold of his arm, as he stood within my reach, I got to my feet with reasonable steadiness. There were muted cheers from the onlookers. Nodding and simpering at the men all around me, I lilted, “Thank you so much. Do you suppose anyone could go out and fetch my bag, and my hat and parasol? I believe they fell along the—”

Already half a dozen would-be heroes were stampeding towards the door. Yet, if I had walked in here under my own power, any request for help would have been met with deepest suspicion. Such is life: odd.

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it (but read the others in the series first!)

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press - Wednesday Books for this advanced reader's copy.

I was extremely excited that the popularity of the Enola Holmes movie on Netflix had apparently caused a desire to restart the Enola Holmes series of books!

I really enjoyed this re-start, which allowed Enola to work together with Sherlock on a new case, rather than working in the shadows.

Enola and Sherlock are hired to find the location of Felicity, wife of Earl of Dunhench. They're hired by Felicity's twin sister Leticia, who says she was informed of her sister's death by the Earl and she didn't believe it. After a lot of interesting twists and turns, the case is solved..... but not necessarily in the way that they all agreed upon.

Review: Rebel Belle

Rebel Belle Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it.

This is the story of Harper Price (Southern belle, future Homecoming Queen, etc) and David Stark (school reporter and Harper's nemesis since childhood). Through a freak accident, Harper becomes a Paladin (one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts) and is charged to protect David (whose fate could very well be to destroy Earth).

In the words of a friend: That really was Legally Blonde meets the Terminator in Alabama.

This first book in the trilogy was a great way to escape the real world and have a little fun with magic, strength, power, and fate. I looked forward to reading the next two books in the series.

Review: The Bridges of Madison County

The Bridges of Madison County The Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 out of 5 stars - It was ok.

Being a 4th generation Iowan, I felt it was time for me to read/listen to this book. The narrator was great, so I'm glad I listened in the car rather than reading it.

This is the story of Robert Kincaid, a photographer and free spirit, and Francesca Johnson, an Iowa farm wife. They meet when Robert gets lost trying to find one of the covered bridges of Madison County for an article in National Geographic.

This story was completely unrelatable. Within less than a week, these two are sleeping together and claiming the other is the love of their life. Francesca contemplates leaving her husband and children for someone she had just met. While it tries to be a sweet love story, it's just kind of cringe-worthy with the adultery and continued annual "ceremony" that Francesca has on her birthday.

The book is presented as a telling of a "true story", yet it's a complete fabrication. That part also highly bothered me.

The Women's March: A Novel of the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession The Women's March: A Novel of the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession by Jennifer Chiaverini
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it.

Thank you to Jennifer Chiaverini and HarperLuxe Publishers for the Advanced Reader Copy.

I did enjoy this book and reading more about names I've heard before (Alice Paul, Jane Addams, Ida B Wells) and new-to-me names in the history of Women Suffrage (Maud Malone). I did, however, struggle getting into the story. It didn't flow as well as the previous historical novels. I think that might have to do with following more than one main character.

This was a new piece of history for me. I'd never heard of the Women's March or what they went through to make it possible. From prep to actually pulling it off, there was a lot that went into the march. It was interesting to learn about the push back from government, police, men, and even other women who didn't want the march (or suffrage) to happen.

I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a little more mention of the rally held at Constitution Hall, since Alice Paul didn't attend. I love hearing mention of the building I own a small piece of!

Review: Midnight Train to Prague

Midnight Train to Prague Midnight Train to Prague by Carol Windley
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 out of 5 stars - It was ok

Thank you to NetGalley and Grove Atlantic, Atlantic Monthly Press for this Advanced Reader Copy.

This book follows the life of Natalia Faber from shortly after WWI to post WWII. We're introduced to many other characters along the way as they weave in and out of her life story, including: her mother, Dr. Magdalena Schaefferová, Miklós Count Andorján, and Anna Schaefferová.

While I found the story somewhat interesting, I have to be honest and state that I got bored and wondered where the heck it was going. The only reason I continued reading to the end was because I needed to know if the story line actually wrapped up all the characters we'd met. Many of the "coincidences" of meeting people and then running into them later seemed highly unlikely.

Review: The Dollhouse: A Ghost Story

The Dollhouse: A Ghost Story The Dollhouse: A Ghost Story by Charis Cotter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada, Tundra Books for this Advanced Reader Copy.

Alice and her mom are heading to some small town where Alice's mom will be a live-in nurse to a rich elderly lady. While there, she wakes up to a young girl nicknamed Fizz resting in her bed when she wakes up. When Alice wakes up seeing Fizz, she has been transported to another time or place. Alice is convinced Fizz is a ghost. Fizz is convinced that Alice is the ghost.

In Fizz's world, there's a dollhouse that her mother has been slowly adding new items to. Alice notices that the dollhouse is an exact replica of the house she and her mother are staying in (and also Fizz's house). Alice finds the dollhouse in her own world behind a locked door in the attic. What she notices in both worlds is that the dolls appear to be replicas of the people in Fizz's world, with the addition of an Alice doll.

While I didn't find this book at all creepy as described, I was intrigued by the story and wanted to know the outcome of the mystery. Who was the ghost? Was the dollhouse magic? How did other characters in the story tie in? I think this would be a great story for a middle grade student who likes mysteries and magic.

Review: In the Garden of Spite: A Novel of the Black Widow of La Porte

In the Garden of Spite: A Novel of the Black Widow of La Porte In the Garden of Spite: A Novel of the Black Widow of La Porte by Camilla Bruce
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

3 out of 5 stars - It was ok

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkely Publishing Group for an Advanced Reader Copy.

This is based on the story of Belle Gunness (Belle Sorensen, Brynhild Storset, and other names I'm sure) who was an active serial killer in Chicago, IL, and La Porte, IN, around 1900. While not a lot is known of specifics, and no deaths were ever tied directly to her, this book takes a look at what might have happened.

While I was intrigued by a female serial killer that I'd never heard of, the book left me a little bored. Sure, there was death and mental health issues and violence, but it was a pretty slow build to get there. I kept wondering when the "serial" part of the killer was going to start. The story was interesting, with historical details that brought it to life, but I kept waiting for something to happen.

Review: Make You Feel My Love

Make You Feel My Love Make You Feel My Love by Robin Lee Hatcher
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Publishing for the advanced reader copy.

This book was really nothing more and nothing less than a great way to escape with a little mystery and history thrown in. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters, both contemporary and historical. It was a quick read that tried to keep me guessing what might happen next. It did make me want to visit Idaho, though.

Both story lines include a woman fleeing a bad situation (oppressive father, abusive boyfriend, etc), and both story lines also include the women finding love in their new location. The two stories intersect with a beautiful violin, first owned in 1895 by Cora Anderson and later found by Chelsea Spencer in her aunt's antique shop.

Review: A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I listened to this book, and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed it, but I think it might have been harder to get into if I'd been reading it.

I enjoyed that the story, the people, and the experiences that all seemed relatable. I contrast this book with "Wild", which I really disliked because I couldn't relate to the author/narrator in any way. While I don't think I'll ever follow in their footsteps and do a through hike of any long trails, it did make me want to get back to my hiking of the Ice Age Trail in segments.

This was my first Bill Bryson book, and I look forward to reading/listening to more! I really enjoy his Iowa connection, even if it's been a while since he lived there.

Review: People We Meet On Vacation

People We Meet On Vacation People We Meet On Vacation by Emily Henry
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for an Advanced Reader Copy to review. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This is a story of Poppy and Alex, two opposites who met and became friends in college. They have always gone on an annual trip together, until something goes terribly wrong on one of them. It's now been a few years since they've spoken, and Poppy now finds herself looking for why her life seems a little "off". A friend tells her to go back to the last time she was truly happy, which was on vacations with Alex.

The story had lots of fun twists and turns. I could relate to both characters in some way (I think I would call myself a mix of the two of them). The adventures they go through while Poppy tries to make a "perfect" trip with Alex are nothing short of ridiculously hilarious. Everything that possibly could go wrong, definitely does.

I spent the whole book attempting to figure out how the title fit in, and I'm happy to say that it does end up making sense in the end.

Review: The Story of Arthur Truluv

The Story of Arthur Truluv The Story of Arthur Truluv by Elizabeth Berg
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it

This story was, in the end, about how family isn't based on genetics but choice. You can make your own family based on those who love you and you love in return. It doesn't have anything to do with your birth.

Arthur still loves his wife, his "Nola Corrine, Beauty Queen", and visits her daily to have lunch together. While there, he meets Maddie, a high school student who feels like an outcast in her life. Arthur's neighbor, Lillian, has her own traumas happening in her life and becomes part of this unconventional family.

I loved seeing how the three of them interacted and how the family came together. I also loved how Arthur visited graves of those around his wife, in order to learn more about her new neighbors.

One thing I will say though was that I wasn't fully impressed with the author as narrator in the audiobook. She wasn't bad, just not one of the best I've heard.

Review: Three Missing Days

Three Missing Days Three Missing Days by Colleen Coble
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it (but read the other 2 first)

Thank you to Thomas Nelson Publishing and NetGalley for this Advanced Readers Copy. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I really enjoyed this continuation of the Pelican Harbor series (One Little Lie, Two Reasons to Run) and have to wonder if it will continue beyond a trilogy.

Police Chief Jane Hardy has had a lot of drama in her world since learning that her son Will was alive, her father kept the truth from her, and they can now all be together. That is, until someone kills her son's adoptive mother and frames her son for the murder. The entire book revolves around why someone would want to kill the woman and why they would want to pin it on Will. Through the twists and turns of the story, I had some inklings of who the killer might be and why, but the final reveal was not exactly as expected. I do love a good hidden surprise at the end.

Absolutely Everything!: A History of Earth, Dinosaurs, Rulers, Robots and Other Things Too Numerous to Mention Absolutely Everything!: A History of Earth, Dinosaurs, Rulers, Robots and Other Things Too Numerous to Mention by Christopher Lloyd
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 out of 5 stars - If you ask me, I'll tell you to read it.

Thank you to NetGalley, Publisher Spotlight Audio, and What on Earth Books for this Advanced Reader Copy.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. It was a great way to learn at a high level about all things throughout all history. I loved that the timeline was presented as a 24 hour clock, as that's easy to understand by most people! I would often listen to a chapter while driving or just out for a walk. It was easy to follow and interesting to learn new things.

At the end there was mention of another book for other history that may have been left out. I look forward to that next book!
